Description

A rare wooden advertising sign from the Osaka Alkali Company (大阪アルカリ), a manufacturer of chemical fertilizers such as sodium sulfate during the Meiji to Taisho era (circa 1900–1920s).

Unlike enamel signs (which are more commonly seen), wooden signs were easily damaged or discarded, making surviving examples like this particularly scarce.

The carved inscription reads 「万作完全肥料」(Manzaku Kanzan Hiryo – “Manzaku Complete Fertilizer”), written in old-style characters. Above the main text, the company mark is visible, with the words 「大阪アルカリ」 (Osaka Alkali) engraved.

The surface is blackened with ink-like pigment, giving it a striking contrast with the carved gold-painted characters. Please note: some black pigment may transfer to hands or clothing if touched.

	•	Condition: Authentic antique with visible wear, scratches, and minor losses consistent with age. Back side plain, with hanging hole.
