Late XIXth Century damask table linen with 16 napkins and initials D.P. - Textile - 2.4 m - 1.6 m

This is a complete damask linen table linen set with 16 napkins measuring 60cm x 60cm. The fact that it is a complete set most probably confirms that the set has never been used. gain this would not have been too unusual. There was very little available at the end of the XIXth Century to give as presents to the wedded couple. The family and school girls who had been taught sewing, embroidery, lace making etc.. Even if they could not get the dowry ( trousseaux) ready in time the nuns and sisters from the local Convents were brought in to complete everything for the day. The couple on the wedding day were virtually " bombarded" with linen and enough to last their wedded lives. They were all important pieces and had to be registered by the local Notaire as was the jewelry ,furniture etc.. The initials are outlined first in high relief embroidery and then filled in with small "pinhead" embroidery. The are sitting in a oval frame of open thread work garlands. The table linen has the same initials and around the frame the top is scattered with open flowers. The sides have a wealth and so well choreographed , of garlands of ribbon, open thread work garlands ,flowers and bows. It is all so well distributed. A feast to the eyes.
