This ORIGINAL FIRST EDITION of J. Rambosson's "Les pierres précieuses et les principaux ornements" was published in 1870 in Paris in a beautiful half-leather binding with gilt spine and edges.
This beautifully illustrated book is a 19th-century gemological treatise exploring the natural history, cultural significance, and artistic use of precious materials:
Precious stones: Diamond, ruby, sapphire, emerald, topaz.
Organic gems: Pearl, coral, amber, jet, ivory.
Metals: Gold, silver, platinum, aluminum—used in jewelry and ornamentation.
Cultural insights: Ancient beliefs, legends, and symbolic meanings tied to each material.
Artistic techniques: How these materials were cut, polished, and set in decorative objects.

298 pp. Includes 43 b/w plates by Yan' Dargent and 1 chromolithograph. With a decorative Ex Libris plate (owner from Geneva).
Considered one of the finest French works on gemology of its time.
Occasional old underlining or remarks, both with pencil, therefore easily to be erased.
Very good condition.
