-Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) was a Dutch graphic artist best known for his mathematically inspired prints, impossible constructions, and explorations of symmetry and perspective. While not initially embraced by the mainstream art world, Escher cultivated a unique visual language that resonates globally today, blending art, geometry, and optical illusion.

His works are highly prized by collectors, with original lithographs, woodcuts, and mezzotints fetching significant prices at auctions. Some of his most iconic prints like Relativity, Ascending and Descending, and Hand with Reflecting Sphere have sold for tens of thousands of dollars. Escher’s limited editions are especially valued, and institutions and private collectors compete for rare pieces.

One of his most haunting and symbolic works is Eye (1946), a piece that showing a human eye in extreme close-up. At first glance, it appears to be a hyperrealistic study of anatomy, but on closer inspection, the pupil reflects a human skull. This chilling juxtaposition speaks to Escher’s fascination with perception, mortality, and the illusion of reality. Technically meticulous and emotionally evocative, Eye remains one of his most psychologically powerful works.

Escher's appeal has only grown over time, solidifying his legacy as both a technical master and a visionary who challenged the boundaries between science and art.
