Japan,a Photo Theater II” is a collection of works by Daido Moriyama, one of Japan's most internationally acclaimed photographers. After graduating from the design department of a crafts high school, Moriyama worked as a commercial designer, then as an assistant to photographer Takeji Iwamiya and Eikoh Hosoe, before becoming an independent photographer. This book is part of a series of photo books published by Asahi Sonorama in the 1970s, and consists mainly of works presented at the 1977 Nikon Salon exhibition “Tokyo: The World of Amigure,” a sequel to his first book “Nippon Gekijo Shashincho,” a play on the title? A collection of works. The following is an excerpt from a text by Shoji Yamagishi, former editor-in-chief of Camera Mainichi: “Moriyama's photographs have particles and tones. Moriyama's photographs have grain and tone, and the ability to capture the way things are. In his mind, there is loneliness, suspicion, desire, despondency, and even sentimentality. Sometimes there is even hope. (Included in The Japanese Photobook 1912-1990)
