El período Edo se refiere a la época entre los años 1603 y 1868 cuando la familia Tokugawa gobernaba Japón. Esta era recibe su nombre de la ciudad de Edo, lo que es actualmente Tokio, donde el shogunato Tokugawa tenía su sede gubernamental. A veces se la conoce también como la era moderna temprana, debido a que fue en esta época cuando empezaron a gestarse muchas de las características de la sociedad japonesa moderna.
