The History of the "Yellow Seal Dollars" Used by Americans in Italy During World War II:

During World War II, the United States issued special $1, $5, and $10 banknotes known as "yellow seal dollars" for use in occupied territories, including Italy. These notes were marked with a yellow Treasury seal and often featured overprints to distinguish them from standard U.S. currency. Their primary purpose was to prevent use by enemy forces in the event of capture, as they could be easily identified and invalidated.

In Italy, "yellow seal dollars" were introduced immediately after the Allied landing in Sicily in July 1943, since the new AM-lira notes were not yet available. The Italian government, through a decree issued on September 24, 1943, authorized their circulation and fixed the exchange rate at 100 lire per dollar.

However, their use was temporary. On July 31, 1945, a legislative decree declared the end of their legal tender status, banning their importation, possession, and trade.

These banknotes, issued in the 1934 and 1935 series, were signed by Treasury Secretary Henry Morgenthau Jr.
