Herman Miller, Vitra - Charles & Ray Eames - Chair - Armchair with Steinberg Cat - DIRECT FROM THE EAMES OFFICE - Fibreglass, Powdercoated wire base

- Material: dyed-through fibreglass-reinforced polyester, with cat drawing applied by hand in acrylic ink, sealed with a coat of clear varnish and individually numbered. Powdercoated wire base. - Manufacturer: Herman Miller/Vitra - Year of design / year of production: 1950/2024 Not available anymore - in 2024 was launched a limited edition of 500 pieces by Vitra (produced in collaboration with Eames Office, Herman Miller and Vitra). Authorized by Steinberg Foundation. Steinberg cat is hand painted and numbered in ink on an Eames Fiberglass Armchair with the low wire base, affectionately nicknamed the "cat's cradle base." - Description: This limited edition recreates a drawing by artist Saul Steinberg on a white fiberglass Eames Armchair shell. The playful illustration depicts a sleeping cat resting comfortably within the chair's seat. It is a faithful reproduction of one of the two surviving vintage chairs from a spontaneous collaboration between Steinberg and the Eameses. Context: In 1950, artist Saul Steinberg befriended designers Charles and Ray Eames while visiting Los Angeles. During a visit to the Eames Office, Steinberg spontaneously began drawing on the furniture, walls, and floors. He was especially drawn to the new Fiberglass Chairs, creating a "small, imaginative cosmos of characters and animals" on them. Among these drawings was a sleeping cat, which became part of a series of photographs documenting the event. Of all the drawings, only two vintage chairs still exist: the one with the cat and another with a nude figure. Vitra has released this limited edition to honor the timeless collaboration between these creative visionaries. Launched in 1950, the Eames Shell Chairs were the first industrially mass-produced chairs with a single plastic shell for both the seat and backrest. Known for their organic, curved shape, the chairs provide a sensation of lightness and comfort, supported by various base options. The design revolutionized furniture with its innovative approach to form and function. - Dimensions : 610 x 625 x 630 mm. Seat height is 256 mm. - Eames Office certificate The lot has already been shipped from Los Angeles to storage in Amsterdam. Therefore, customs clearance and shipping timelines will follow our standard process, with no additional delays expected
