A photographer exhibits his books. One might object that this is only a manner of speaking. Photographers’ books are made up of their photographs. And indeed it is Raymond Depardon’s photographs that are displayed on the walls, accompanied by a few of his comments. All the same, the true organizing principle of this exhibition is the unity of the book. And the book signifies something other than a mere collection of images. It signifies, in a sense, the opposite: a closed volume, turned page by page, which stands in contrast to the spatial unfolding of images and subordinates their power to the direction of a discourse that tells us what we see, what the photographer has done, and what he and we can think of it. From the outset, then, this arrangement closes off a certain path—the path that places the free viewer before a self-sufficient image, the path of a certain autonomy of art. Raymond Depardon’s image is not self-sufficient.

It might be said that he belongs to the family of reporters, devoted to informing us about the world, rather than to that of visual artists devoted to the cult of form. But that explanation is superficial. The book, like the newspaper, certainly assigns the image to support a discourse or to be supported by it. Yet this is not a matter of one kind of dependence replacing another. Depardon’s books are the works of a photographer freed from the assignments given to a reporter, released from the obligation to provide the public with images of major events or pressing issues of the day. They are the works of an artist who is master of his images. But this very freedom of the photographer does not take the form of the image’s self-sufficiency. He first won it by placing other words beneath the reporter’s photographs. It thus takes the form of another heteronomy, where the image is doubly bound to the law of discourse: through its sequencing with other images and through the words that comment on it. It is photography’s own freedom that calls, for its fulfillment, for the supplement of words and the form of the book.
