The Island of the Women Divers by Italian cultural anthropologist Fosco Maraini (1912–2004), translated by Fumiko Makino. Maraini is also known for his research on Japan, Tibet, and Ainu culture, and gained international acclaim for his sharp observations and poetic documentation. The original work, published in 1954 as L’isola delle pescatrici (The Island of the Women Divers), documents the lives of female divers living on Hekura Island off the Noto Peninsula through photographs and text. The women, challenging the sea through free diving to secure their daily sustenance, reveal not only the harshness of their work but also their pride and solidarity, powerfully bringing the entire community's way of life into focus. The Japanese edition first appeared in 1964, published by Miraisha. It was later reprinted in a new edition in 1989 and again in 2013. Comprising 32 photographs and meticulous descriptions, this book is both an ethnographic study and a literary record depicting human vitality. It stands as an important volume that reexamines Japanese culture through an outsider's perspective. (The text is the main focus; photographs are limited to the initial 32 plates.)
