Reprint XXL Nighthawks by Edward Hopper 1942

Hopper is one of the greatest representatives of American realism, and there is nothing more American than his work, which shows contemporary rural or urban scenes, solitary characters, still surrounded by people, figures in silence that perfectly portray this increasingly dehumanized West.

Initiated in illustration by Correspondence, around 1920 he was able to devote himself exclusively to painting, very realistic, far from the avant-garde, but paradoxically modern, anchored in his time but mysteriously timeless.

Edward Hopper was a tall, quiet, thoughtful, cultured man... His wife Jo was the opposite: talkative, witty, extroverted... They often argued. They seemed incompatible and, at the same time, inseparable, and they were together all their lives. Josephine took control of her husband's career and was both the only model he used in his paintings with female characters, from prostitutes to housewives.

Her solitary figures reflect modern isolation through large empty spaces. Their faces are often diffuse, generic and inexpressive. Perspectives are simple and geometric, emphasizing straight lines in muted hues, which amplify that melancholy impression of loneliness and isolation.
