Rare Pre-War Japanese Mineral & Rock Specimen Teaching Set - Stone (mineral stone) - Teikoku Mineral Teaching Materials Company (帝国鉱物教材社) - Japan - 20th century
A very rare and complete Japanese educational mineral and rock specimen set, produced by the Teikoku Mineral Teaching Materials Company (帝国鉱物教材社) in the early Shōwa period (ca. 1930s, pre-WWII).
This boxed set was intended for use in elementary school science classes (grades 4–6), teaching children about geology, minerals, ores, and fuels. Each compartment contains a numbered sample, corresponding to the printed index inside the lid, which lists the name, place of origin, properties, and uses of each specimen.
Dimension:
Approx. 30 cm × 22 cm × 4 cm.
The set includes over 40 different specimens, such as:
- Quartz (水晶, Suishō)
- Calcite (方解石, Hōkaiseki)
- Sulfur (硫黄, Iō)
- Chalcopyrite (黄銅鉱, Ōdōkō)
- Coal (石炭, Sekitan)
- Hematite (赤鉄鉱, Sekitekkō)
- Granite (花崗岩, Kakōgan)
- Biotite (黒雲母, Kuro-unmo)
- Sandstone (砂岩, Sagan)
- and many others, some preserved in small glass vials.
Condition:
- Original box with printed reference charts inside the lid.
- Specimens are complete and numbered, showing expected signs of age.
- Paper shows wear, staining, and some foxing consistent with its 90+ years of age.
- Box covering (faux reptile pattern) intact with some edge wear.
They are highly collectible as both geological teaching sets and historical artifacts of Japanese education. A rare opportunity to acquire a genuine pre-war Japanese mineral specimen collection.
