Ganesha

Cette sculpture en bronze figure Ganesha, divinité à tête d’éléphant, fils de Shiva et de Parvati, vénéré comme maître des commencements et destructeur des obstacles. Le dieu est représenté assis en position royale (lalitasana), richement couronné et orné de bijoux et de vêtements finement ciselés.

Il tient dans ses quatre mains des attributs symboliques :

une coupe de douceurs (modaka), nourriture favorite de Ganesha et symbole de prospérité,

un fruit (probablement une grenade ou un citron), symbole d’abondance,

une main levée en geste de protection (abhaya mudra),

une autre paume ouverte dans un geste de don (varada mudra).

À ses pieds se tient la souris (mushika), son fidèle véhicule, symbole d’humilité et de l’aptitude à pénétrer les recoins les plus secrets de la connaissance.

Le style, marqué par une exécution robuste et des détails décoratifs accentués, correspond à la production népalaise du milieu du XXe siècle, destinée aux sanctuaires domestiques comme aux usages rituels.
