Kusukazu Uraguchi - Shima no Ama(志摩の海人) - 1981

Shima no Ama(志摩の海人) Kusukazu Uraguchi Japan Camera Co./1981/Japanese/310*218*23 Shima no Ama (Ama Women of Shima) is a collection of photographs by Japanese photographer Kusuichi Uraguchi. Born and raised in Shima County, Mie Prefecture, Uraguchi is an amateur photographer who, while producing and selling pearl ornaments, has continued to photograph the climate of Shima, and in particular its ‘divers’. Speaking of ama photography, the works of Fosco Maraini, an Italian anthropologist and photographer, and Yoshinobu Nakamura are well-known, as are those of Sadayuki Iwase, who continued to take photographs as an amateur in his home town of Oyado, Chiba Prefecture, for many years while also running his own business. This book, published in 1981, consists of illustrations selected from over 200,000 negatives taken over 25 years. Starting with the women dressed in the unique white ‘isogi’ of Shima and the change in style to ‘wetsuits’ with the changing times, the documentary-like depiction of teenage ‘girl divers’ and their history are recorded in detail with text in this valuable book.
