Antique Silver Snuff Box – “Plaisirs Champêtres” – After Nicolas Lancret – Signed R. Wicker – 19th Century

An exquisite antique silver snuff box, richly decorated with fine repoussé and engraved detail. The lid is adorned with the pastoral scene “Plaisirs Champêtres” after the French Rococo painter Nicolas Lancret (1690–1743). The engraving is signed R. Wicker G., referencing the skilled engraver who reinterpreted the scene.

The front shows an idyllic countryside gathering: a shepherdess, a gentleman, and a young woman with a birdcage, accompanied by sheep and dogs – a classic Rococo theme symbolizing leisure, romance, and harmony with nature. The sides are decorated with ornamental scrollwork and cartouches, executed with high precision.

This box is a fine example of 19th-century Continental craftsmanship, highly collectible for enthusiasts of Rococo revival, silverwork, and snuff box collections.

Historical note:
The Rococo style flourished in 18th-century France, celebrating elegance, intimacy, and pastoral pleasures. Artists like Nicolas Lancret, a pupil of Watteau, were famed for their “fêtes champêtres” (rural festivities), depicting aristocrats at leisure in romanticized countryside scenes. Such imagery became extremely popular throughout Europe and was later revived in decorative arts of the 19th century, as seen in this box.
