Antique Terracotta Djenne jar - Mali.

This superb and highly characteristic pot measures 10 cm high.
This Djenne pot was collected in my private collection in 1986.

A red earthenware pot from Djenne from the 15th - 17th century, tapering upwards with an outward opening, painted in black with some geometric figures, the pot is 10 centimeters high, weighs 214 grams and is undamaged and unrestored with only a few traces of use (such as a small chip on the rim, see photo 12).

The Djenne culture, specifically the culture of the city of Djenné in Mali, is a mix of ancient traditions, Islamic influences and a unique mud architecture. The city of Djenné itself, with its iconic Great Mosque, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is an important center of Islamic learning and art in West Africa. The city was also an important trading and market center, and its mud architecture, with houses built on hillocks to protect against flooding, is a characteristic of the region.

The terracotta pot is original Djenne-Djenno, also known as Jenne-Jeno or Djenne. The terracotta pots are supplied in different sizes and this one stand alone on a perfectly flat surface, they are made to stand on uneven ground. This antique specimen is in good condition and can be a perfect addition to any collection or home decor. 

Djenne was once a thriving city , which was also the commercial center of this region and was located in the Interior Delta of the Niger River, which was the heart of the Mali Empire between the 12th and 16th centuries. The Djenne civilization is a precursor to the Dogon of Mali.
