Reprint of LÉON DUPIN for Gaufres sèches et fourrées Rita / 1933

Léon Dupin was born on March 22, 1898 in Saint-Étienne (Loire). He had two older brothers, Jean and André. His father died in January 1899, leaving the family penniless and forcing his mother to work hard to support her three children.

Self-taught, he gradually made a name for himself in advertising. He moved to Paris, where in 1926 he joined the Joseph Charles printing company as an advertising designer. The workshop was near the Panthéon, at 9 rue de l'Estrapade, in the 5th arrondissement.

In addition to drawing, Léo Dupin was a master of photography. 
He developed his shots himself, transforming the bathroom of his apartment into a laboratory. On several occasions, his wife and eldest son inspired the characters of some of his posters (Les Biscottes Mascotte, Café Gilbert, Familistère sweets and chocolates, etc.).

In 1934, during a competition organized by Seita, his design for Celtique cigarettes was selected. He worked at the Joseph-Charles printing house until 1936. In 1936, after becoming the first poster designer for Prot Frères, he turned down an offer to go to work in the United States for Walt Disney Studios, as the idea of leaving France and having to learn English made him reject the proposal.

 Paris in January 1946, where he found work at the Prot Frères printing house as an advertising designer and head of the workshop on Avenue de l'Alma. But as other poster designers (Savignac, Colin, etc.) had already made their mark, he did not find the same work again: in this workshop, mainly dedicated to packaging and POS designs, he created models for medicine boxes, food cans and even labels for camemberts. A master of photography, he also creates advertising pages. Photography plays a fundamental role in his work and regularly serves as the basis for his designs.
