Het koninkrijk Benin, gelegen in het huidige Nigeria, staat bekend om zijn indrukwekkende bronskunst die teruggaat tot de 13e eeuw. De bronzen werken van Benin worden geprezen om hun vakmanschap, detail en historische betekenis. Ze dienden vaak als koninklijke insignes, decoraties voor paleizen en tempels, en als rituele objecten. 

De bronzen beelden uit het oude koninkrijk Benin worden traditioneel vervaardigd via een proces dat bekendstaat als de verloren-wasmethode. Voor het weg laten vloeien van de weer opgewarmde was zijn de open plekken in de sculptuur. Dit proces vereist zowel vaardig vakmanschap als gedetailleerde kennis van metaalbewerkingstechnieken.

Luipaarden hebben symbolische betekenissen in de Benin-cultuur, waaronder kracht, macht en koninklijkheid. Ze worden vaak afgebeeld in de kunst en mythologie van het koninkrijk. Dit specifieke luipaardbeeld heeft een patina en is zeer gedetailleerd bewerkt. Het bevat een patroon met concentrische cirkels met daartussen stippen.
