L'art africain et la raffinement de tissage Kuba.
Produit au DRCongo par les Shoowa, Bashoowa sous groupe des Kuba, ces étoffes sont constituees d'une base d'une base de textile en raphia sur laquelle les fils sont coupés à ras, forment un effet velours accentué par les contrastes de ton. Les motifs géométriques formés représentent les scarifications corporelles de l'ethnie ou les décorations des sculptures.
Ces étoffes raffinés étaient destinés à être utilisés à la Cour royale, en tant qu'assise ou la couverture, afin de rehausser son prestige. Elle prenait dans bien des cas valeurs de monnaie, ou suivaient aussi leurs propriétaires dans la tombe en couvrant le corps du défunt. Ce fut le roi Shamba Bolongongo qui aurait introduit au 17 ème siècle au pays Kuba le technique de tissage du velours. Il avait précédemment initié les Kuba à l'art de la forge. Ce sont des hommes qui assouplissaient les fibres des jeunes palmiers et d'écorces pour en tirer de longs filins, ce qui constituait un exercice délicat et laborieux qui prenait plusieurs mois. Les broderies étaient ensuite l'apanage des femmes originellement des femmes enceintes.
Les pagnes masculins, mapel, et féminins, ntschak, étaient adaptés par leurs motifs décoratifs au rang social de leur propriétaire.
