Albert-Charles-Auguste Racinet (1825–1893), an accomplished artist, is today best known for publishing two major pictorial works on the history of design: Le costume historique and L’Ornement polychrome; while he was an engraver and art director at the Parisian publisher Firmin Didot et Cie. Published in ten installments between 1869 and 1873, the first edition of L’Ornement polychrome (Color Ornament) is a visual documentation in 100 plates of the decorative arts from antiquity to the 18th century. (The work was so successful that in 1885–87 Racinet published a second series, this time of 120 plates, updated to also include 19th-century drawings.) 

The volume consists of a double frontispiece with red and black lettering followed by about fifteen unnumbered pages containing indices; followed by 60 pages of numbered general preface and 100 color plates each preceded by an explanatory sheet, for a total of 277 pages. The cultures and periods represented include: Celtic, Assyrian, Armenian, Primitive, Moorish, Russian, Ottoman, Etruscan, Greek and Greco-Roman, Indo-Persian and Persian, Byzantine, Egyptian, Arab, Indian, Japanese and Chinese, Middle Ages, Renaissance, 16th and 16th/17th centuries, 17th and 17th/18th centuries, 18th century.

Hardcover case. Loose chromolithograph in folder, fabulous colors with gold and silver highlights, about 4,000 motifs. Under each image is a small emblem (a clog, a spinning wheel, a fish, a lantern, etc.). A magnificent production.
Good general condition with signs of aging. The photos are an integral part of the description.
