Drawing from his archives, the photographer presents forgotten photos that he took during his numerous stays in Morocco, a country that he discovered in the 1970s and which fascinates him with its light, the harmony of colors and the sensoriality of the landscapes in which people take part in their daily activities.
Since his first trip in 1972, Harry Gruyaert has continued to return to Morocco, in search of the initial shock felt: a splendid harmony between shapes, colors, the daily gestures of people and nature. From the High Atlas to the desert, from the countryside to Marrakech, Fez, Essaouira or Erfoud, Harry Gruyaert's images constitute imaginary theaters where the spell that this country has exerted on him for more than 50 years is expressed. But his photographs are also paradoxically very physical.

“Taking a photo is both seeking contact and refusing it, being at the same time the most there and the least there. On the ground, it is a real “battle” with reality, a sort of trance to record an image or perhaps miss everything.

Morocco is the expression of this particular tension, halfway between exaltation and delight.

"Born in Belgium in 1941, Harry Gruyaert studied photography and film-making. He made a few films as director of photography for Flemish television before turning to color photographs in his adopted Paris in the early 1960s.
By the end of the 1970s he had travelled to the United States, India, Egypt, Japan and Morocco. The latter was a revelation to Gruyaert whose images of the country were later published in two different books. In the early 1970s, while he was living in London, he worked on a series of color television screen shots later to become the TV Shots now part of the Centre Pompidou collections. Around the same period he also photographed his homeland and produced two books, Made in Belgium and Roots."
