Leopardo real – Bini Edo – Benín – Bronces del Benín

El Reino de Benín, situado al sur del actual Nigeria, es famoso por sus magníficos bronces y esculturas en marfil.
Estas obras constituyen uno de los mayores tesoros de la humanidad y figuran entre las piezas más destacadas de los museos de todo el mundo.

El palacio del Oba, donde se encontraban los suntuosos santuarios reales, era considerado el centro de la capital y del reino.

El arte de Benín es, sin duda, un arte real.
Su organización dependía de una de las tres órdenes en el poder, el Iwebo (las otras dos eran Iweguae e Ibiwe).
Esta orden era responsable de las joyas y los efectos personales del rey.

Numerosas cofradías de artesanos estaban afiliadas a esta orden. Trabajaban principalmente para el rey y solo podían aceptar encargos de otras personas con autorización real.
Los fundidores de bronce, escultores de marfil, tejedores, sastres y artesanos del cuero eran algunas de las cofradías dirigidas por los Iwebo.

Los leopardos de bronce estaban destinados a decorar los altares y solían presentarse en pares.
Como se utilizaban durante las libaciones y sacrificios de purificación, a menudo se les daba la forma de aquamánile (recipiente para verter líquidos rituales).

En el pasado, los leopardos formaban parte de los animales domésticos de los palacios. Eran fáciles de domesticar e incluso podían llevarse con correa.
Con motivo de las grandes festividades, el Oba sacrificaba un leopardo, costumbre que se mantuvo hasta comienzos del siglo XX, durante la fiesta del Igue.
