Victorian mahogany and boxwood string tea caddy with working key, converted to jewellery box - Box - Boxwood, Mahogany

Victorian mahogany and boxwood string tea caddy, c. 1850s, with working key, now converted to storage box Antique mid-Victorian mahogany tea caddy with boxwood stringing, now repurposed as a general storage box and complete with working key. This rectangular caddy displays a warm, rich patina and features a diamond-shaped bone key escutcheon, original brass hinges, and fine boxwood inlay outlining the edges. The lid opens to reveal a plain interior, with the inside of the lid lined in red textured paper—evidence of its original use as a tea caddy. Dating to c. 1850s, this piece would originally have been used for the secure storage of loose tea, a valuable household commodity in Victorian Britain. This example has since been adapted for general use, but retains its period charm. This is a beautiful and versatile piece that fits effortlessly into a range of home décor styles, from classic Georgian or Victorian interiors to eclectic and vintage-inspired spaces. Its elegant design and rich wood grain make it ideal as a jewellery box, keepsake chest, or a stylish place to store letters and small treasures. Whether displayed on a desk, sideboard, or bookshelf, it adds a touch of authentic antique character to any room. Collectors of antique boxes and lovers of English craftsmanship will appreciate its history and quality, while anyone looking for a unique and thoughtful gift will find it both practical and charming—a true blend of decorative appeal and everyday usefulness. 335 g 19.5 x 11 x 10.5 cm overall 17.7 x 9.4 x 8.2 cm interior Very good antique condition – the box retains a lovely patina and the key is fully working.
