This photograph captures a pivotal moment in Marilyn Monroe’s career on December 4, 1957, when she visited New York’s legendary Actors Studio after returning from London, where she had co-starred in The Prince and the Showgirl alongside Laurence Olivier. Her upward gaze at the studio’s sign reflects both her ambition to refine herself as a dramatic actress and the vulnerability of a star determined to move beyond the sex-symbol label.

Distributed by Bettmann / Corbis, the image carries exceptional historical value: it documents Marilyn’s decision to reinvent herself through the discipline of acting and her engagement with key figures such as Lee Strasberg.
