St Gabriel with cornucopia full of flowers and fruits 

The painting is oil on canvas with size 42 x 30 cm

This painting was likely part of a devotional series or a domestic or church altarpiece. These types of images had an important catechetical and emotional function in the colonial world, helping to connect with the religion and promote piety among the faithful.


Some key features that identify it:

    •    The ornately dressed angel in richly decorated garments with elaborate gold embroidery and jewels, which is characteristic of Andean religious art blending Catholic iconography with local aesthetics.
    •    The wings and the gesture of the hand pointing upward, symbolizing divine authority and connection to heaven.
    •    The cornucopia (horn of plenty) spilling flowers, which represents abundance and divine providence.
    •    The fine lace-like cuffs and baroque ornamentation, common in Spanish colonial painting.

This type of artwork is often part of the “Ángeles Arcabuceros” (Angel Musketeers) or related angelic imagery popular in the Viceroyalty of Peru and Upper Peru (modern-day Bolivia), where angels were depicted as richly dressed nobles or soldiers, often carrying symbols of power, wealth, or divine gifts.


The distinctive ornamental attire is also notable, with gold appliqués, and embroidered details typical of the iconography of arquebus-wielding angels and archangels in South American viceregal art.
