Rare Late 19th / Early 20th Century Surveyor’s Theodolite – Brass, Steel, and Wood with Inlaid Box

A superb example of precision engineering from the late 19th to early 20th century, this fine surveying theodolite was used for geodetic and cartographic measurements as well as early civil-engineering work.

Expertly crafted from brass and steel, the instrument features horizontal and vertical graduated arcs, fine adjustment screws, and leveling vials. The telescope retains clear lenses and smooth movement, while the engraved scales remain crisp and legible.

A particularly striking element is the original wooden carrying case, beautifully preserved and decorated with a mother-of-pearl Ottoman-style floral inlay—a rare artistic touch that turns this scientific tool into a true collector’s object of historical beauty.

Condition

Mechanically complete and functional; all moving parts operate smoothly.

Light oxidation and patina consistent with age.

Original wooden box intact; hinges and clasp in working order.
