19th century French Orientalist school, in the manner of Eugène Delacroix (1798-1863), traces of signature.

"Lovers in a harem"

The sensual image of the harem woman became an important source of inspiration for the Western painters of the Orientalist school. Many of the scenes depicted at the time focused on illustrating the exoticism of intimate harem life, as is the case here with our painting, which shows a very sensual image of a languid, lascivious man and woman in a harem.

For these artists, the shift from mythological nudes to Oriental nudes was easy; it took them away from academic routine and allowed them to use exotic accessories that were pleasing to the eye. At the beginning of the 19th century, artists were no longer content to reinvent a mythical Orient: they travelled and brought back from Spain, Greece, Turkey or North Africa their own vision of the Orient, captured in situ.

The vast majority of art buyers belonged to the industrial and financial bourgeoisie.

Orientalist painters offered them the escape they needed, the chance to dream before images of minarets, white kasbahs, colourful souks, deserts and oases, but also of sultanas secluded with their slaves in the refined and luxurious intimacy of harems.

For the bourgeoisie, Orientalism meant sensuality, the exciting mystery of nudity suggested by light, diaphanous silks, the apparent freedom of morals of cloistered women whose attitudes and behaviour contrasted sharply with Western prudery. The sight of these images of harems gave him the somewhat perverse sensation of breaking into a forbidden universe where exoticism and eroticism were intimately intertwined.

This small painting is entirely characteristic of Delacroix and his use of colour to convey luminosity, which he rendered brilliantly with a sweeping brushstroke and powerful texture.

Approx. dimensions: 31.5 x 15.5 cm (+ complimentary frame).

Given its quality and proximity to the work of Delacroix, this painting deserves to be researched in order to decipher its signature and thus determine its author, probably an artist from the circle of the greatest painter of the Romantic School of the 19th century.
