IL SOGGETTO
Il dipinto propone, pittoricamente, un gruppo scultoreo, realizzato sul mito del “Satiro con la Baccante”, dallo scultore franco svizzero Jean Jacques Pradier. Esso fu presentato, nel 1834, al Salon Carrè del Museo del Louvre in Parigi. Il satiro, personaggio mitologico ibrido tra uomo e capra, afferra la baccante, la quale, a sua volta in posa estatica, si aggrappa al collo della divinità rurale la quale simboleggia la tentazione e il desiderio. Osservando la scultura, ci si chiede se la ragazza, chiaramente in stato di ebbrezza, si offra all'amante o se, al contrario, cerchi di sottrarsi ai suoi assalti.

CURIOSITA’
L’opera del Pradier, a suo tempo, destò grande scandalo e diede la stura ad infinite dicerie. Quella scultura, che oggi può essere considerata al massimo sensuale, al tempo fu vista addirittura come pornografica.
Velenose dicerie, probabilmente messe in giro da mediocri colleghi evidentemente mossi dall’invidia, insinuavano che Pradier avesse adoperato un calco dal vero per realizzare la Baccante, pratica inaccettabile a quell’epoca. Qualcuno non tardò a riconoscere, nelle fattezze della ragazza nuda, Juliette Drouet, l’amante del Pradier che, successivamente, sarebbe divenuta la concubina, e musa ispiratrice, dello scrittore Victor Hugo.



THE SUBJECT
The painting pictorially proposes a sculptural group, created on the myth of the "Satyr with the Bacchante", by the French-Swiss sculptor Jean Jacques Pradier. It was presented in 1834 at the Salon Carrè of the Louvre Museum in Paris. The satyr, a mythological hybrid character between man and goat, grabs the Bacchante, who, in turn in an ecstatic pose, clings to the neck of the rural divinity which symbolizes temptation and desire. Looking at the sculpture, one wonders whether the girl, clearly in a state of inebriation, offers herself to her lover or whether, on the contrary, she tries to escape his assaults.

CURIOSITY
Pradier's work, in his time, caused great scandal and gave rise to endless rumors. That sculpture, which today can be considered sensual at best, was even seen as pornographic at the time.
Poisonous rumors, probably spread by mediocre colleagues evidently moved by envy, insinuated that Pradier had used a life cast to create the Bacchante, an unacceptable practice at that time. Someone did not take long to recognise, in the features of the naked girl, Juliette Drouet, Pradier's lover who would later become the concubine and muse of the writer Victor Hugo.
