Contexte historique

Les frères Lander partent en 1830 dans le but de résoudre une question géographique longtemps débattue : quel est le cours final du fleuve Niger ? (Certains pensaient qu’il se déversait dans le lac Tchad, ou qu’il « perdait » ses eaux dans des marais, etc.) 

Ils débarquent à Badagry (sur la côte du golfe de Guinée) le 22 mars 1830. 

Ils remontent jusqu’à Boussa (actuel Nigeria), un lieu déjà connu grâce à Mungo Park, puis descendent le fleuve jusqu’à son embouchure dans l’océan. 

Ils rencontrent divers obstacles : difficultés de navigation, climat, maladies, tensions avec des populations locales, périls logistiques.

Géographie / cartographie : les frères Lander ont confirmé que le Niger se jette dans l’océan Atlantique, ce qui était une question géographique majeure du début du XIXᵉ siècle. 

Exploration africaine : leur voyage ouvre la voie à une meilleure connaissance de l’Afrique de l’Ouest pour les explorateurs et les géographes européens, et aussi pour ceux intéressés au commerce et à la mission. 

Relations avec les populations locales : le récit donne des descriptions des peuples rencontrés, de leurs coutumes, des difficultés de cohabitation, de la logistique dans ce type de territoire (maladies, climat, nourriture). Cela permet de comprendre les réalités de l’exploration, mais aussi les biais du regard européen.

Historical context

The Lander brothers left in 1830 in order to solve a long-debated geographical question: what is the final course of the Niger River? (Some thought it was pouring into Lake Chad, or « losing » its water in swamps, etc.)

They landed at Badagry (on the coast of the Gulf of Guinea) on March 22, 1830.

They go up to Boussa (present-day Nigeria), a place already known thanks to Mungo Park, then down the river to its mouth in the ocean.

They encounter various obstacles: navigation difficulties, climate, diseases, tensions with local populations, logistical dangers.
