His father, Mario Rinaldi, was founder of the metal furniture manufacturer RIMA. Founded in 1916, Gastone Rinaldi and his brother Giorgio gained control of the company in 1948. In 1956, RIMA began to produce chairs with metal structures that had folding mechanisms. The best-known example is the avant-garde Saturno Sleeper Sofa (c. 1958), part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1974, due to disagreements within the company, Gastone Rinaldi left RIMA and founded Thema in Limena. Both the tubular steel cantilever Arrianna armchair (1978-79) and the Dafne chair (1978) were nominated for the Compasso d'Oro in 1981. Thema closed in 1989.
