This enamel sign reads "Sado Yamaka Miso."

"Yamaka Miso" is a miso brand produced on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, and was widely loved by locals in the mid-Showa period. Blessed with a cold climate and abundant spring water, Sado has long been a renowned producer of fermented foods, particularly known for its ideal climate for making miso and soy sauce.
The logo, featuring the character "chikara" (power) in the style of a family crest, truly symbolizes "powerful miso" and a "taste that provides nutrition and vitality." During Japan's postwar reconstruction, Yamaka Miso was a favorite in many households as a "source of energy" that supported people's dining tables.

The beautiful contrast of red and white on this sign makes it one of the most visually impactful enamel signs from the Showa period.
The red symbolizes "fermentation" and "warmth," and is reminiscent of the color of miso itself. The "Yamaka Miso" sign, written in white letters, has a warm feel as if it were written by an artisan's brush, conveying the sincerity of the local brewery's handmade products. The character "Sado" at the top and the "power" crest express pride in the regional brand and give the overall design a sense of harmony and dignity.

Enamel signs for regional miso brands like these are a symbol of the shopping culture of the 1950s and 1960s.

At the time, signs displayed in front of stores across the country were more than just advertisements; they were like "poster girls" conveying the flavors and culture of the region. Even as it stood exposed to the cold winter winds, the Yamaka Miso sign likely conveyed "safety and deliciousness" to local people.
