A nicely painted Chinese under-glazed cobalt blue bowl from Jiajing period (1522-1566), Ming dynasty. The blue on this bowl shows strong purple blue, which is typical Jiajing blue.  Exterior on the wall decorated the bowl with lotus scroll between two blue string lines. Another three cycle blue lines painted around/on the foot. Interior around the rim painted a band of diaper patten. In the center painted a flower spray on the under-glazed cobalt blue ground. The glazed base bears a mark ‘福’ (fú, meaning of fortune and good luck) in double cycle lines. Such painting style and such pattern combination can be seen on the bowls from the shipwreck Fort San Sebastian (also called as Espadarte) sank in 1558.

Diameter 14.3cm; diameter of the foot rim 5.5cm; height 6.9cm; weight 249g.

Condition: In good condition. A small notch beneath the rim exterior. Aside a chicken claw crackle. There are a few other glaze crackles possibly from production. Slightly degraded glaze due to sea water.
