Flämische Schule (XVI) - The crucifixion with soldiers
Flemish Renaissance school, early 16th century. The "Crucifixion with soldiers".
Rich composition featuring figures including the Virgin Mary, Saint John, Mary Magdalene and Roman soldiers at the foot of the Cross playing dice for Christ's tunic.
In their long account of the Passion, each of the four evangelists mentions the fact that immediately after crucifying Christ, the Roman soldiers cast lots for his tunic. Saint John explains that the soldiers divided Christ's other garments into four parts, but that they all fought over the tunic. The hideous, grimacing faces of the soldiers emphasise the base instincts of these coarse beings, in striking contrast to the noble features of Christ and the holy figures.
A museum-quality painting of great finesse, the luminous, pastel palette is reminiscent of the Italian Renaissance painters who certainly inspired the painter of this work.
Oil on panel (partially parquetry at two vertical cracks, which have been stabilised). Some usual restoration, overall in good condition, fine network of cracks.
Work ca.: 97,5 x 72 cm
Frame (complimentary): 111 x 87 cm.
Provenance: Belgian private collection.
