Phoenician Glass Ancient Phoenician Glass Eye Bead Pendant – ca. 600–300 BCE
Ancient Phoenician Glass Eye Bead Pendant – ca. 600–300 BCE
A rare and attractive ancient glass eye bead, attributed to the Phoenician/Punic culture.
Material: Polychrome glass
Form: Spherical core of deep blue glass with applied red and yellow lugs, and encircling light blue/white decoration. Designed in the apotropaic “eye bead” style, believed to protect against evil.
Date: ca. 600–300 BCE
Origin: Eastern Mediterranean, attributed to Phoenician or Punic workshops
Size: approx. 1.5 cm diameter
Weight: approx. 9 g (bead)
Presentation: Strung on a modern chrome-plated gold-toned chain (approx. 20 in / 50 cm), wearable as a pendant
Condition: Intact with surface wear, weathering, and encrustation consistent with ancient age. Small chips and pitting to surface, as expected for a piece over 2,000 years old. The bead has been mounted for modern wear without alteration to its form.
A fine example of Phoenician glasswork, with vivid polychrome knobs and protective symbolism.
Please Note:
The chain is a chrome-plated, gold-toned chain that will develop a patina after a few weeks of daily wear. For this reason, we will provide you with a replacement chain should you wish to change it later. However, we advise using specialized tools for this.
