A wine with a classic and unmistakably Rioja profile. A symbol of our 150-year commitment to a privileged land. The blend of Tempranillo and Mazuelo offers a memorable wine, surprising for its endless nuances.

Vintage 2019. Excellent.

A vintage marked by a very positive vegetative cycle that resulted in optimal grape ripening, thanks to the excellent sanitary and vegetative condition of the vineyard and the nature of the clusters—loose, well-aerated, and accompanied by moderate plant vigor. The result: wines with extraordinary tannic maturity, high polyphenolic content, pronounced structure, and intense color. Excellent wines for long aging.

Composition: 95% Tempranillo – 5% Mazuelo
Tempranillo vineyards are located in Fuenmayor, Cuzcurrita, Huércanos, and Hormilla. Average age: 30 years, dry-farmed and bush-pruned. Soils vary, mostly clay-limestone and low in organic matter.
The Mazuelo vineyard comes from Medrano. Bush vines over 50 years old, planted in sandy soil with higher organic matter and good drainage.

Vinification

Tempranillo:
Pre-fermentation bleeding of 7% of the must and a 5-day cold maceration with skins. Alcoholic fermentation at 26°C with controlled pump-overs, followed by a 24-day maceration with skins. Gravity racking. Malolactic fermentation in underground cement tanks.

Mazuelo:
Alcoholic fermentation in small stainless steel tanks, with a 10% pre-fermentation bleeding. Gravity racking. Malolactic fermentation in underground cement tanks.

Aging

Tempranillo:
24 months in mixed barrels (80% French oak, 20% American oak), aged 1 to 3 years, medium toast.

Mazuelo:
20 months in French oak barrels with light toast on the body and no toast on the heads to preserve fresh fruit notes.

After blending, the wine rests for 20 months in the underground cellars of the winery

The selection of the finest Rioja grapes is the cornerstone of its philosophy. It also stands out for its mastery of long aging processes. Montecillo has an underground cellar where its wines mature under ideal conditions.
