Sharing is caring. In times of COVID-19, restaurateurs in particular are finding it difficult to navigate the ongoing crisis financially.

This problem gave rise to an idea: how Düsseldorf residents can not only help restaurateurs with their hearts, or better yet, with their "Häzz," but also express their gratitude to those who have done important work during the crisis – namely, hospitals and nursing homes.

When the "lockdown" for the catering industry in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the city of Düsseldorf began in March, it was initially a shock for Michael Krziwon, too. Like every bar in the city, his cult and local pub, the "Bilker Häzz," which had just turned four years old, would no longer be able to serve guests.

But, as so often in his life, he saw the sudden collapse of all income as a challenge that had to be overcome – and he had a trump card up his sleeve.

A few weeks earlier, his service team at the "Bilker Häzz" and Krziwon had been preparing for the upcoming summer season. The team, in collaboration with Westphalian master distiller Frank Wigger, had created a very special gin for the "Häzz" guests: "Gin mit Häzz."

Wigger has already enjoyed considerable success on the market with his "Tasting Room" and his "Make Your Own Gin" tour. This very "Gin mit Häzz" proved to be a key pillar in covering the "Häzz"'s running costs during the tough and necessary measures to contain the spread of the virus.

This surprise success gave birth to a vision for Michael Krziwon: Why not support the city's restaurateurs and important care facilities in the fight against the pandemic – and in the process, conjure up some "Häzz" (a spirit) in the glass of those who love to drink?

Krziwon is receiving support from two Düsseldorf entrepreneurs, Björn Borgerding and Walid El Sheikh, who immediately agreed to actively support the campaign.

Borgerding and his partner Paolo Anania are providing, among other things, a free online shop. El Sheikh is providing additional support with his first-class contacts in the restaurant scene.

Krziwon's idea is as simple as it is sustainable: The Düsseldorf "Charity Gin" is produced with Wigger, with only a cap on the resulting costs. Restaurateurs who sell the gin in their own stores will receive €10 of the sales price.

All other profits will be fully and transparently donated to selected care facilities and hospitals in Düsseldorf. In addition to sales through participating bars and pubs in the city, there is also an exclusive online distribution.

The "Charity Gin" is also a real eye-catcher, one that every gin and Düsseldorf fan should have in their collection. Düsseldorf artist and rising star Leon Löwentraut exclusively painted an image for the label,
featuring the Düsseldorf Elector and art patron Jan Wellem.

His exhibition openings are spectacular top events. Whether in New York, Copenhagen, London, or St. Petersburg – his paintings always sell out at the opening in no time.

The "from Düsseldorfers for Düsseldorf" approach with "help for self-help" is outstanding. The fact that one of the world's hottest and most up-and-coming artists, Elector Jan Wellem, painted our gin for the label is, of course, a wonderful story and will certainly make the gin a sought-after collector's item.
