Le léopard a une signification symbolique importante dans le culture du Royaume du Bénin ou elle est souvent associé à l’Oba, le roi. Le léopard est considéré comme l’un des animaux emblématiques qui représentent le pouvoir royal, la force et la protection. Dans les arts et l’artisanat béninois, on trouve souvent des représentations de l’Oba accompagné d’un léopard, symbolisant ainsi son autorité et son statut. Cette association renforce également le lien entre l’Oba et le monde spirituel, le léopard étant parfois considéré comme un animal totémique ou un gardien spirituel. 

L’Oba est le titre traditionnel du roi du Royaume du Bénin, situé dans l’actuel sud-ouest du Nigeria et non pas le Bénin actuel. L’Oba est considéré comme le chef suprême et la plus haute autorité politique, religieuse et culturelle du Royaume. Sa fonction est héréditaire, se transmettant de père en fils, et il occupe une place centrale dans la vie sociale et politique de la société béninoise. L’Oba est entouré d’un ensemble de traditions et de rituels qui renforcent son autorité et son statut sacré.
