Daido Moriyama - Farewell, Photography / Bye Bye Photography - 1972

Farewell, Photography / Bye Bye Photography Daido Moriyama Shashin Hyoronsha/1972/Japanese/185*230*20 Farewell to Photography, a photobook by Daido Moriyama, one of postwar Japan's most representative photographers. Following Nippon Theater Photo Album (1968), this is Moriyama's second solo photobook. Even amidst the turbulent era of Japanese photography in the 1960s and 70s, this book continues to be hailed as a masterpiece. Influenced by various pioneers yet continually searching for his own photographic style during the 1960s, Moriyama persisted in his struggle even after forming the provocative group “Provoke” with Takuma Nakahira and others. Amidst this, he created an unprecedented avant-garde collection that outright rejected the “reality of photography” embodied by figures like Niépce and newspaper photography. It was composed of unprincipled reproductions from television and scraps of negatives from shutter blanks. His aversion to and desire to break away from “photography that holds not a shred of doubt about what photography is” is powerfully imbued in the ‘illustrations’ and the “title.” The book also features a fascinating dialogue with Takuma Nakahira at the end.
