(Dedicatoria) + 222 n. 15 splendide tavole allegoriche incise all'acquaforte, a piena pagina, fuori testo. Opera significativa del primo Settecento italiano. Pier Jacopo Martello (1665–1727) fu un influente uomo di lettere italiano, principalmente ricordato come drammaturgo e riformatore teatrale del primo Settecento. La sua idea centrale fu quella di modernizzare la tragedia italiana ispirandosi ai modelli francesi (come Racine), ma per farlo inventò un suo metro, il famoso verso martelliano (un verso di 14 sillabe), che divenne il suo tratto distintivo. Oltre ad essere un teorico critico (scrisse Della tragedia antica e moderna), fu anche un poeta dell'Arcadia (con il nome di Mirtilo Dianidio), un movimento che cercava di ripulire la letteratura dagli eccessi barocchi. In sintesi, Martello fu una figura di transizione che cercò di spingere la cultura italiana verso l'eleganza e le innovazioni europee, conciliando il rigore classicista con la sperimentazione. Legatura in piena pergamena bionda con titoli in oro al dorso su tassello. Molto solido e molto ben conservato.
