L'équipement standard des guerriers Ngbandi, Sango, Yakoma et Mbugbu comprenait de longs boucliers ovales en maille de rotin dense, avec des panneaux de poignée en bois au dos. Ces groupes ethniques vivent dans la zone frontalière entre le sud de la République centrafricaine et le nord de la République démocratique du Congo. Appelés vara ou wola, ces boucliers présentent généralement une variété de motifs symétriques avec un contraste élevé entre la lumière et l'obscurité (Felix, Low et Lu (éd.), Fatal Beauty: Traditional Weapons from Central Africa, 2013
