A propos de l'artiste :
Le photographe suisse René Burri est né en 1933. À l’âge de 13 ans, il photographie Winston Churchill à Zurich. Il a complété sa formation de photographe à l’École des arts appliqués de Zurich.

En 1955, Burri a attiré l’attention internationale pour l’un de ses premiers reportages, « Touch of Music for the Deaf », sur les classes de la pédagogue musicale Mimi Scheiblauer pour les enfants sourds-muets, publié dans le magazine Life. Burri est devenu un associé de Magnum en 1955 et un membre à part entière en 1959.

Au cours de ses voyages à travers l’Europe, le Moyen-Orient, l’Asie du Sud-Est et de l’Est, l’Amérique latine et du Nord, il a couvert des événements historiques, tels que la visite de Leonid Brejnev à Cuba en 1974, le cinquantième anniversaire de la Longue Marche en Chine en 1985, et la chute du mur de Berlin et les événements de la place Tiananmen en 1989. Parmi de nombreux autres sujets, il a représenté Maria Callas, Alberto Giacometti, Yves Klein, Le Corbusier et Ernesto « Che » Guevara. Son portrait du révolutionnaire avec son cigare est devenu connu dans le monde entier.

Le premier livre de Burri, Die Deutschen, a été publié par Fretz & Wasmuth à Zurich en 1962 et l’année suivante par Robert Delpire à Paris sous le titre Les Allemands. De nombreux magazines internationaux publient également ses reportages. En 1965, Burri participe à la création de Magnum Films et passe six mois en Chine, où il tourne le film Les Deux Visages de la Chine, produit par la BBC.

Il a reçu de nombreux prix et récompenses, dont l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres en 1991, le prix Dr Erich Salomon de la Société allemande de photographie en 1998, le Swiss Press Photo Life Achievement Award en 2011 et le Leica Hall of Fame Award en 2013.

Il a créé en 2013 la Fondation René Burri, qui conserve l’intégralité de son œuvre et se trouve à Photo Elysée à Lausanne, où s’est tenue en 2020 la rétrospective Explosions of Sight. Burri est décédé à Zurich, à l’âge de 81 ans, le 20 octobre 2014.
