Biblia Hebraica – Frankfurt an der Oder, 1595. Johann Jonath. & Friedrich Hieronymus Richter.

A rare Hebrew print of the complete Bible – Five Pentateuch, First Prophets, Last Prophets and Ketubim. A very early edition, printed here in Frankfurt am Main, in the year 1595 (1595).

In this edition, unique partial leaves were incorporated between the various parts – as was the custom in some editions of the period – and they are also present in this copy (except for one partial leaf that is missing). According to the National Library, some attribute the printing of the text itself to Wittenberg in 1597, while the titles and colophon were added in Frankfurt an der Oder in 1595.

Copy status: Ff.(147), (111); (120); (127).
First title page missing (five Pentateuch), as well as the title page of “Early Prophets” and one subsequent leaf and the last leaf of Psalms. All other sections are present, including the title pages of “Ketubim” and “Later Prophets,” and the loose leaves between sections. Last leaf missing with three lines (colophon), but the entire text of the actual Bible is complete. Overall condition very good for its age, stains and local defects, signs of use.

Original parchment binding from the printing period, with defects and significant wear, thickened spine with stitch reinforcements. Hardcover copy: total height 24 cm, book thickness approx. 8 cm.

Bibliographic context:
The National Library records that the text was actually printed in Wittenberg in 1597, and only in 1595 were the titles and colophon added in Frankfurt an der Oder. This fact explains why some of the copies are missing titles or a colophon page - and it is possible that they were not included in all pre-printing orders.
Copies of this edition of the Bible in Frankfurt an der Oder are extremely rare. Even when title pages or a colophon page are missing, this is considered by some libraries and catalogs to be a characteristic of the printed edition itself, and not necessarily a later omission
