Alexis Piron est né à Dijon le 9 juillet 1689 et mort à Paris le 21 janvier 1773. 
Il débute par des études de droit, puis se tourne vers la littérature et le théâtre. 

Son talent se manifeste surtout dans l’épigramme et la comédie.

Un style vif, d’esprit et souvent satirique. Il excelle dans l’épigramme comme genre. 

Il navigue entre les genres : théâtre de foire, comédie, tragédie, poésie, épigrammes.

Son œuvre théâtrale de comédie (notamment La Métromanie) rencontre un bon succès, alors que ses tragédies sont moins populaires. 

Il eut des démêlés avec l’Académie française : il fut élu mais non ratifié à cause d’une « Ode à Priape » litigieuse.

Alexis Piron was born in Dijon on 9 July 1689 and died in Paris on 21 January 1773.

He began his studies in law, then turned to literature and theater.

His talent is manifested mainly in epigram and comedy.

A lively, witty and often satirical style. He excels in epigram as a genre.

He navigates between genres: fairground theater, comedy, tragedy, poetry, epigrams.

His theatrical work of comedy (notably La Métromanie) met with good success, while his tragedies were less popular.

He had run-ins with the French Academy: he was elected but not ratified because of a contentious « Ode à Priape ».
