reliquaire bakota Gabon 
Reliquaire Bakota  Dans l'art africain, les Kota (Bakota) laissaient le corps de leurs morts exposé aux éléments, dans la forêt. Ils commencèrent à enterrer leurs chefs, puis à exhumer leurs ossements pour les mettre dans des boîtes en écorce ou des paniers appelés bwété, sur lesquels une statue était placée. De tels statues appelées "gardien de reliquaire" Kota étaient confiés à des chefs de clan qui les tenaient cachés, mettant parfois à contribution le pouvoir des reliques au profit du clan.  Lorsque des crises graves touchaient le village (un village regroupant plusieurs clans), les chefs rassemblaient leurs reliquaires afin d'effectuer des rites. Ce culte était connu sous le nom de bwiti par les Mahongwé et leurs voisins, pour qui les gardiens constituaient les "visages" du bwété. Belle allure dorée et coiffe double.  Les Kota, ou Bakota, forment une population de langue bantoue d'Afrique centrale, vivant pour moitié à l'est du Gabon (province de l'Ogooué-Ivindo), et pour l'autre moitié de l'autre côte de la frontière, en République du Congo. Leurs figures de reliquaires en bois recouvert de plaques de cuivre sont réputées3. Le terme « Kota » désigne soit un sous-groupe, que l'on désigne aussi « Kota-Kota » afin de les distinguer du groupe plus large auquel il appartient, et qui est souvent nommé aussi « Bakota », comptant, avec les Kota-Kota ou Kota, les Kwele, Mahongwe, Shamaye, Shake, Ndambomo, Wumbu et Ndasa.
