Krishna Venu Gopala

Bois sculpté à décor en haut-relief

Ce panneau sculpté représente Krishna, le huitième avatar de Vishnu, dans sa forme de Venu Gopala — « le berger jouant de la flûte ».
Appuyé gracieusement sur une jambe, le dieu est figuré dans une attitude dansante, tenant la flûte transversale près de ses lèvres. Le visage souriant, les yeux mi-clos et la coiffe conique stylisée refletent l’élégance propre à la sculpture en bois du sud de l’Inde.

Ce type de relief décorait autrefois les éléments architecturaux des maisons nobles ou des temples villageois, souvent sur les linteaux, piliers ou encadrements de portes. Le bois conserve encore une patine profonde. L’œuvre illustre le moment de béatitude mystique où Krishna charme les gopis (les jeunes gardiennes de vaches) par la musique divine de sa flûte, thème central de la bhakti (dévotion amoureuse envers Dieu). La facture sobre mais expressive, la frontalité hiératique et les volumes arrondis situent cette pièce dans la tradition populaire du XIXᵉ siècle, héritière de styles régionaux transmis depuis la période Nayaka.
