Mortlach Special Release 2022 "The Lure of the Blood Moon" is a limited edition non-age-statement (NAS) single malt Scotch whisky from the Mortlach distillery in Speyside, Scotland, released in 2022 as part of Diageo's Special Releases series. Bottled at 57.8% ABV with no added colouring, this whisky stands out with its ruby sheen and "blood moon" motif on the label, symbolising the transformation of the "Beast of Dufftown" into a meaty, fruity profile. The elegant packaging emphasises its magnetic, dark character, making it attractive to connoisseurs looking for intensity without a declared age.

History and Production

The Mortlach distillery, founded in 1823 as the first legal distillery in Dufftown, is renowned for its robust whiskies distilled 2.81 times in a unique six-style system, giving them their characteristic depth. This edition was initially matured in bourbon casks, then finished in virgin oak, tawny port and red muscat wine casks, bringing sweet, winey nuts and a ruby colour. With no age statement, the whisky captures the legend of night-time alchemy under a blood-red moon, with a limited production of approximately 20,000 bottles worldwide.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, the whisky reveals spicy, meaty aromas such as cassoulet with beans, tomatoes and pork, intertwined with red fruit nuts, grapes and mineral tones, evolving into herbal and peppery accents with a hint of tobacco. The palate is full and smooth, with rich flavours of caramel, toffee, dark chocolate, espresso, pink pepper, aniseed, ginger and cinnamon, with fruity notes of cherry, apple and orange, as well as subtle meatiness and herbs. The finish is long and dry, with wine tannins, spices such as cloves and aniseed, leaving a spicy, warm aftertaste with a slight acidity when water is added.
