TRENSUM MØBLER 1950s Sweden - Johannes Andersen - Canapé - Model-FENIX - Steel, fabric - Mid century Design

This rare, fully restored “Model Fenix” sofa was designed by Johannes Andersen and produced by Trensums Møbler in the late 1950s. It represents one of Andersen’s transitional works — a now hard-to-find model that directly precedes his iconic “Capri” design. The Fenix preserves Andersen’s signature organic, human-centered form language, yet it is more compact in its proportions, with a slightly lower backrest and narrower seat, giving it an intimate and refined lounge-like character. The construction features elegant, continuous curves where the armrests, seat, and backrest merge seamlessly into one fluid silhouette — a hallmark of the best traditions of Danish modernism. The seat consists of three structured cushions, while the delicately button-tufted backrest recalls classic upholstery details of the 1960s. During the restoration, the sofa was reupholstered in high-quality Italian jacquard fabric in an olive-green and white multicolored weave, lending a contemporary touch while maintaining vintage authenticity. The piece stands on black V-shaped metal legs, creating a light, floating appearance that contrasts beautifully with the soft upholstery. This combination of sculptural elegance and structural precision reflects both Trensums’ craftsmanship and Andersen’s refined design sensibility. The Model Fenix remains a collectible example of Scandinavian modern design, embodying the timeless balance between comfort, functionality, and harmonious aesthetics that defined mid-century Danish furniture.
