Il Maracanã è non è solamente "uno stadio", ma è "lo stadio" dove Pelè portò il calcio sempre più in alto, forse ispirato dalla forma di questo luogo che sembra un'astronave pronta a decollare dal centro di Rio de Janeiro.

Questo scatto racconta un momento preciso nell'estate del 2011. Ecco la sua storia:

Immaginate di trovarvi ai piedi delle favelas, all'inizio degli anni 2000, all'interno del tempio del calcio mondiale, con una folla che tifa la propria squadra come se fosse l'ultima partita della storia: Fluminense contro National. 
Mentre ero sempre più attratto da tutta questa folla e da questo monumento futuristico, mi sono mosso dal mio posto e ho iniziato a salire sempre più in alto.

Lo spettacolo che si presentò ai miei occhi fu qualcosa di grandioso: non so quante migliaia di persone tutt'intorno cantavano, dietro lo stadio, come a ricordarci che eravamo sulla terra e non stavamo volando, le montagne punteggiate di case inventate dal nulla delle Favelas e sopra di noi dense nuvole di pioggia. Non dimenticherò mai quel momento.

La scena era troppo grande per qualsiasi obiettivo, così ho puntato tutto a sinistra dello stadio, ho girato la macchina fotografica in verticale e ho iniziato a scattare per creare una serie di scatti che avrei poi unito: uno... due... tre... quattro... e a un certo punto è successo: GOOOAALLL.... mentre continuavo a scattare, metà dello stadio urlava e saltava sugli spalti per un gol che sembrava essere arrivato lì solo per essere ricordato, e io stavo scattando proprio in quella direzione! 

Ecco la storia di questo scatto. Uno scatto che è rimasto nel cassetto per più di 14 anni!
