Nato in Lussemburgo, Steichen emigrò da bambino negli Stati Uniti con i suoi genitori, stabilendosi infine a Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Nel 1895 acquistò la sua prima macchina fotografica. Le fotografie di Steichen di questo periodo sono soft-focused e atmosferiche, riflettendo il suo interesse primario per la pittura e l'influenza degli impressionisti, in particolare Claude Monet, così come dei fotografi pittorialisti americani come Clarence H. Born in Luxembourg, Steichen emigrated to the United States as a child with his parents, eventually settling in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. In 1895 he purchased his first camera. Steichen's photographs from this period are soft-focused and atmospheric, reflecting his primary interest in painting and the influence of the Impressionists, particularly Claude Monet, as well as American Pictorialist photographers such as Clarence H. White. In 1900, Steichen made a brief stop in New York City en route to Paris, where he planned to study painting at the Académie Julian. White had come across the young artist's photographs and was sufficiently impressed to arrange a meeting with Alfred Stieglitz at the New York Camera Club. Upon his return to New York in 1902, Steichen opened a professional portrait studio at 291 Fifth Avenue. That same year, he became one of the founders, along with Stieglitz, of the Photo-Secession group. This coincided with Stieglitz's founding of the magazine Camera Work, in which Steichen's photographs appeared frequently, including a "Special Steichen Supplement" in April 1906 and a monographic double issue in 1913. When the United States entered the war in 1917, Steichen volunteered for service and was commissioned a lieutenant in the Signal Corps; he was soon appointed chief of aerial photography for the U.S. Army in France. His experience with the rigorous technical demands of this work changed his view of the medium, and after the war he replaced the rather vaporous symbolism of his earlier pictorialist style with optical clarity and greater objectivity of description. Steichen spent several years experimenting with realistic effects of light, tone, and shadow; during this period, he famously photographed a white cup and saucer against a black velvet background more than a thousand times, hoping to achieve a perfect rendering of subtle gradations of white, black, and gray. In a further reaction to what now seemed to him to be a pious Photosecessionist attitude, Steichen threw himself into commercial photography, establishing a successful commercial studio when he moved to New York City in 1923. He devoted the next 15 years of his life primarily to fashion photography and celebrity portraits for Condé Nast publications such as Vogue and Vanity Fair and to advertising photography for the J. Walter Thompson agency. In particular, as part of his work for Condé Nast, Steichen created striking portraits of the likes of Gloria Swanson, Greta Garbo, and Charlie Chaplin that helped define the era. He closed his highly successful studio on January 1, 1938, and spent much of the next four years pursuing his longtime vocation of plant breeding at his home in Connecticut, focusing in particular on delphinium.
In 1947 Steichen was appointed director of the photography department at the Museum of Modern Art, a position he would hold until his retirement 15 years later.

The Knudsen process is a halftone lithographic printing process used by Edward Steichen which at the time was the highest quality method of any known method of reproducing photos and images.
