Vintage Marquetry Serving Tray – Tumbling Blocks Pattern

A stunning handcrafted wooden serving tray, featuring an intricate marquetry inlay in a three-dimensional “tumbling blocks” geometric pattern, centered around a hexagonal star motif.

The combination of contrasting veneers — rosewood, teak, and maple — creates an optical illusion effect that was especially popular in Art Deco and mid-century marquetry.
The tray is hexagonal with rounded wooden handles and a finely striped inlay border, all beautifully finished and polished to a warm, glossy tone.

A wonderful example of artisanal craftsmanship with strong decorative appeal.
Dimensions: 37 × 26 × 4 cm (h × w × d)
Materials: mixed hardwoods (rosewood, teak, maple)
Condition: In a pre-loved good condition, with minimal traces of age and use. 
Missing minimal marquetry on the edge.
Recently polished and waxed.
Period: ca. 1920–1930
Origin: Continental Europe (possibly France or Italy)

Historical context:
The tumbling-blocks or “cube illusion” pattern, known since the Renaissance, became especially fashionable during the late-19th and early-20th centuries, symbolising precision craftsmanship and the fascination with perspective and geometry that defined the Art Deco era. Such trays were often handcrafted in European ateliers using fine marquetry techniques passed down from cabinetmakers and artisans.
